Removable Nasal Packing (Anterior)

A nasal packing was placed in your nose to control bleeding. Most packings are left in place from 1 to 3 days. They then need to be removed by a healthcare provider.

Home care

  • Don't try to remove the packing yourself unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider. You will be given an appointment to have it removed.

  • Don't pull on the packing.

  • Don't drink alcoholic beverages or hot liquids while the packing is in place. These can dilate blood vessels in your nose and cause bleeding to start again.

  • Be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider as scheduled. Nasal packing is usually removed within 3 days. Packing that is left in place longer than this may cause an infection.

  • If antibiotics were prescribed, take the full course as directed. Don't stop taking them until you have finished.
